In the latest installment of Why Not? — our new project with the Washington Post — I offer a controversial remedy for what ails America.

2. PINK RECOMMENDS. Picks for bookworms, focus seekers & AI adventurers.🎶 📶 📖 📽️
Our ever-popular collection of recommendations is back!
LISTEN: One of my favorite audiobooks of the last few years was Kiley Reid’s 2019 novel, Such a Fun Age. Now Reid has returned with a new novel, read by the same woman-of-a-thousand voices narrator, Nicole Lewis. It’s another smart and diverting tale.
TRY: I’ve been playing around with Perplexity, a newish AI-powered search engine. It’s not a full replacement for Google or DuckDuckGo. But it works well for focused, specific research questions, delivering direct answers along with citations.
READ: If you’re a book person, you’ll enjoy “Book Club,” a weekly newsletter from Washington Post critic Ron Charles. In each edition, Charles offers news, reviews, and a healthy supply of jokes.
WATCH: Next time your attention flags, stare at the dot on One Minute Focus for 60 seconds. When you’re done, you’ll supposedly be better able to focus on whatever task is next. Could just be the placebo effect, but it seems to work for me. (HT: Recommendo.)
